🦠 Policy Shift

How can we compare the impact of various policies on the spread of COVID-19?

Interactive visualization created in collaboration with Doha Debates

Policy Shift is an interactive visualization showing the impact of various public health policies on Covid-19. We worked with epidemiologists from Princeton University, in collaboration with journalists and researchers from Doha Debates, to develop interactive models to illustrate the cause and effect relationships between public health policy and COVID-19.

Policy Shift came out of a desire to express the story of COVID-19 through data, but in a way that could connect to the lived reality of the pandemic.

Policy Shift is a bright and colorful interface where users engage with the Coronavirus through history, into the most recent pandemic. The experience first provided context for coronaviruses in general, then invited users to interact with a variety of timelines. The ultimate experience was a model mapping specific public health policies to their relative impact on COVID-19 infections and fatalities.

The sheer bulk of data collected during COVID-19 made it hard to parse for the lay-person. We allowed players to see the impact of public health policy decisions by visualizing them against real-world data.

The final experience had to be both engaging, and scientifically accurate. Careful collaboration with our content experts at every step made the final experience possible.
